Weekend movie review

This weekend my Dad stopped by, and that gave me a chance to watch the new ‘True Grit’ that had been sitting on my Netflix instant play queue for awhile. I really enjoyed the new version. The music was what really got me, strangely enough. I guess I just really like the beginning/ending song. Hear it in church all the time. Watch the movie if you want to know which one I’m talking about. Also, in this version of the movie everyone can act. So that’s a big plus.  ‘True Grit’ gets 4 out of 5 stars.

Forced Dad and the wife to watch Season2 disc 2 of ‘Chuck’. Still loving this show. It always delivers some laughs, and even though neither of them would get it themselves, I think they both enjoyed watching it. Thought Dad was going to burst a blood vessel laughing at a couple of places. Favorite line from this disc, “What? I wasn’t hatched ya know!” – Casey after hitting a ‘High-C’ note and admitting he was a choir boy. Not giving the series a star rating till it’s over, but I suggest you just start watching. It’s a good funny series.

After Dad went on down to visit my Sister and babysit his grand kids for a week or so, I turned on ‘Thor’. This movie really did a good job of leading into ‘The Avengers’ and while not nearly as good as Avengers was, it’s still a good fun comic movie. I also liked seeing that J. Michael Straczynski wrote the movie and Kenneth Branagh directed. I’m a big fan of both men’s work. I’ve been a fan of Straczynski since Babylon 5,  and have loved Branagh even longer, since I saw his version of ‘Henry V’ probably 18-20 years ago.  Gotta give Shakespeare credit, that Saint Crispin’s day speech is just about the best war/pep talk you’ll ever listen to, and I really enjoyed Branagh’s version of it. ‘Thor’ gets 4 out of 5 stars.

Wreck-It Ralph

So, you guys wanna see this or not?

I have a feeling this is going to be a fun movie, but the kids this is aimed won’t know all the cameo games making an appearance, so I think that’s more for the parents. Also that is a draw for parents so it’s probably good marketing by Disney too. Gotta ask though, how tough was it to get permission to use all those characters? There were a ton of recognizable characters just in the trailer.

Recently Watched

Haven’t done any video reviews in awhile, so I’ll do one quickly.

Watched a bunch of first episodes of the ‘watch instantly’ list from Netflix to see if anything could catch my attention as worth continuing.

Shows that only got me through the first episode:

Gun x Sword

Nabari no Ou

Baka and Test

School Rumble

I watched all of Rin: Mnemosyne and Angel Beats.

Rin is about immortal women trying to keep the world together from some insane male angels. It’s got sex (good bit of it lesbian) and a LOT of gore. These ladies get messed up something good but just like me after turning into a newt they got better. It can be a bit dark, but it’s short. Not unhappy that I watched it. I’ll give it a 3 (maybe 3.5) out of 5.

Angel Beats is about a high school of the recently deceased. Kids that died feeling unfulfilled (or basically feeling that God screwed the over, some really horrible back stories) get a chance to do it again and get it right. Once they are ‘happy’ they move on. One problem, these guys don’t really wanna fit in and the #1 school  student insists on conformity. Really strange fights ensue, considering you can’t stay dead here. From what I see and hear the pain still hurts though. I thought it was an interesting idea and done decently for about 9 episodes. In the last 4 episodes it all kinda falls apart though. I’ll give it a 2.5 out of 5.

Also I’ve seen the first DVD of ‘Chuck’. I’m not to happy that getting the DVD’s is the only way to (legally) watch this series that I’ve found so far. At 1 DVD at a time it’s gonna take me several weeks to watch the whole series even if I watch the entire DVD as soon as I get it. Oh, well. The idea looks interesting and the characters look like fun. I think I’ll like it. And lets face it getting a bunch of DVDs and watching entire seasons quickly is the BEST and most enjoyable way to watch ‘TV’. (At least for me it is.)

LATA!

There is some truth here

Just wanted to share a twitter conversation between me an BigJim about how easy it was to use an iTunes gift card:

berial:    That code redemption was even easier than the e-mail said. I just opened it[edit: e-mail] on the iPhone and double tapped the code.
bigjim:   Apple makes it easy for you to spend money with them 🙂
berial:    Smart. Very Smart. Wonder why ALL the other people at MPAA/RIAA go the extreme opposite and then complain about piracy?
bigjim:   and look who made $13B in profit last quarter.
berial:    Look at who keeps trying to buy congress to pass their custom tailored laws.
bigjim:   wonder how that is working out for them?
