As many of you may already know, my ’05 Honda Accord was declared a ‘loss’ due to the hail damage. The insurance company took the car but gave me a very good price for it. I am going to miss that car for quite a long time. Other than the dents in the body THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT CAR! Sigh.
Anyway, taking the cash the insurance company gave me and adding some of the cash I had saved (for a PC that I won’t get for another couple of years now) I was able to get a 2012 Ford Focus SEL sedan. (Pics below.) Its a bit smaller than the Accord but gets great gas mileage, handles well and has some interesting electronics in it. My ‘complaints’ about it include cloth (not leather) seats and no XM/Sirius satellite radio. My biggest positive about the car? IT IS PAYED FOR, BABY! BOOYAA!

Console. Not a ‘touch’ screen as the top end models have.

So the hail back in March finally killed my car. Actually the car was fine except for the body damage. The cost to repair the body was more than 70% of the value of my ’05 Accord, so the insurance company decided to total it. I had the choice to keep the car minus the ‘salvage value’ and have my title changed to a ‘salvage/hail damage’ title or to let the insurance company take the car. I got a very good price for the car so I let them take it.
Gotta say it was a VERY sad day watching that car get towed away. NOTHING WRONG WITH IT! Someone, somewhere, is going to get a VERY good deal at auction so long as they don’t care about ‘dents’. Miss it already.
Anyway, the title is now being transferred between me and the insurance company so for a couple of days I have no car and no payment. So I CANNOT go get anything until the cash is in my account. Should be good to go around Tuesday-Wednesday.
That’s the setup, and here’s the funny. The long suffering wife, who’s been shuffling me around the last couple of days, has an out of town doctor’s appointment that’s been scheduled for months. She won’t be around and she’ll be taking her car. So I called my Dad down to let me borrow his car for a day or two. He agreed, and was due down at my casa tomorrow. Turns out his car engine light just came on. HE’S without a car for a couple of days!
For some reason that made me laugh. Anyway, it’ll work out. I’ll drive the wife to her folks place and then drive her car back home. She’ll use her folk’s car for a day or two around Columbus, then I’ll drive back up and get her. Not having a car REALLY sucks. Hope the replacement car I end up getting is as dependable as my old Honda. That thing was awesome in the dependability department.
Went to the Mississippi Museum of Art this weekend with the wife. We went to see the ‘Old Masters to Monet‘ exhibit. It was wonderful. Really loved the impressionist’s paintings. My only complaint is that I CANNOT find a list of all the paintings with an image of the painting. There was a painting of a town done with ‘points’ that I cannot for the life of me remember the name of, that I’d love to get a screenshot or print of it.I THINK it’s Hippolyte Petitjean’s ‘Country Village’ 1893, but I can’t find an image on the internet to confirm it.
The Van Gogh of course immediately draws the eye. His self portrait is a stand out even among stand-outs. I loved the Monet’s they had as well. Just go see it!
The exhibit has almost finished its run here in Mississippi, so even if you are only a LITTLE interested GO! GO NOW!
The Museum does have a YouTube series about the exhibit.
I haven’t purchased season tickets to Mississippi State football in a couple of years now. I looked into it for this season and realized, I may never buy season tickets again. I don’t live THAT far away from Starkville, so travel isn’t the major reason. No the reason is simply cost and hassle. The cost of season tickets is around $280 per person. That means I’ll be forking out $560 a year just for tickets that, lets be real here, are gonna suck(upper deck visitor side). If you want ‘good‘ tickets, you have to ‘donate’ a ton to the school. Another cost is parking. They’ve made it all but impossible to park ‘for free’ for football games. So I’ll just assume at minimum another $70 for parking. We’re up to around $630 now just for me and the wife. With food and drink, the cost is, at it’s cheapest, around $700 a year. Almost double that if you included kids.
Don’t think I saying I won’t EVER go to another football game. I will(I hope!). I’ll buy individual game tickets here and there. I just won’t be buying season tickets anytime soon.
I think I’d rather just spend the $700 on cable with the extra going to a new TV or grill and watch the games at home. Of course let’s be real, with the cost of cable the entire $700 will be going to Comcast, but that’s a different rant.
And here I thought just WATCHING football was a cheap hobby.
I need to make this list every time Steam has one of it’s huge sales:
- Borderlands 2 (Got all the DLC during the Steam sale!)
- Skyrim (Steam sale!)
- Civ 5
Games that I currently own and haven’t finished but I want to(eventually):[May have been purchased during previous steam sales]
- Batman: Arkham City GOTY
- Fallout 3 – GOTY
- Fallout: New Vegas
- Torchlight 2
- Witcher 2
Games I know I’ll never go back and finish and regret that I didn’t finish:
- BioShock 2
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution
- Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine
Games I didn’t dislike but didn’t like enough to complete:
- Overlord II
- Overlord Raising Hell
- Spellforce 2: Gold edition
Games I just didn’t like all that much so never finished:
And don’t forget Games that basically never end:
- Blood Bowl: Chaos Edition
- Dota 2
- Marvel Heroes (MMO)
- Team Fortress 2
And the sad part is I’m sure I’m missing several games I could add to this list.
So I received the following mail(snail mail)
Dear Valued Comcast Customer
During a recent audit of our billing system, we discovered that we have not been billing you for one or more of your Digital Transport Adapters (DTA). With your subscription you are eligible to receive one DTA at no charge. Each additional DTA is billed at a rate of $1.99 per month.
We are now correcting this error and will begin billing you effective with your next billing statement. If you feel that we have made an error in our records, please feel free to contact our 24-hour customer service department at 1-800-Xfinity.
Thank you for choosing Comcast.
The problem is, I only HAVE one DTA! I’m being charged $9.95 each for a HD DVR(bedroom), and a HD Set Top Box(living room). I have those two boxes and one DTA so I called up their 1-800 number. The lady on the other end of the phone was nice, and explained the situation to me. HOWEVER, her explanation is NOT what is in that letter. She’s telling me that Comcast now is charging for EVERY DTA. No free ones at all. So basically Comcast changed what they were billing, not the count of DTAs at my house but the fact that I HAVE a DTA. Comcast changed their network to require a DTA and now they are charging EVERYONE to use those DTAs. This is bullshit.
The really sad part is, I’ve never hooked up that DTA. It’s in the guest room and I haven’t set up that TV. This nickle and dimeing is really pissing me off. They upped their Sales Tax and Franchise Fee this month too with no warning. An extra $5-6 on my bill every month with NO benefits to me. Lovely.
