Quick Anime Reviews: My Hero Academia (1 & 2)

Title:
My Hero Academia (Seasons 1 and 2)

Rating: Season 1: 8/10
Season 2: 8/10

Episodes: Season 1: 13
Season 2: 25

Genre:
Action, Superheros, Battle School, Comedy, Shounen

Description:
For unknown reasons the world’s population is full of people with superpowers called ‘quirks’. Over 80% of everyone has a quirk and a new profession has evolved with the evolution of the human race, namely superheroes. They keep the peace and help out during disasters and emergencies. The strongest hero in existence is ‘All Might’ and he is the focus of our main character, Izuku Midoriya. Midoriya is the very picture of what you’d WANT a hero to be, he’s selfless, hard working, and can’t help but throw himself into bad situations to help others out, but unfortunately he is completely quirkless. Midoriya has had a pretty hard time going through school without a superpower of his own. Picked on constantly for his “infirmity” he none-the-less helps out where he can. Then one day he gets to meet his hero All Might and his life changes as the super hero has a secret. He can pass on his power to another person and he is LOOKIING for a successor. My Hero Academia follows the struggles of Midoriya as he tries to come to grips with this new found power that will literally destroy his body if he doesn’t learn how to use it quickly. The fastest way to learn is to join UA High where they train the next generation of superheroes, but can he even pass the entrance exam?

Dislikes:
I do not understand the aims of the villains yet. I hope it doesn’t drag on for years and years like other popular shounen shows have.

Likes:
This is one of the best examples of the shounen genre I’ve seen. I like it a LOT more than Naruto or Bleach and I liked those shows a good bit early on in their runs. This series will need a third season and more to get anywhere NEAR enough episodes to show us all of Midoriya’s (and his friends too!) story and I hope to see it all.

Recommendation:
WATCH! It’s really fun.

Extra:
Who would of thought that a tournament which is so typical it’s cringworthy would still be so much FUN in season 2!

Saijaku Muhai No Bahamut

Rating: 5/10

Episodes: 12

Genre:

Description:
Lux the seventh prince of the previous empire, helped overthrow his own country because of how corrupt it was. He now serves as an odd-jobs man for whoever asks for help. Things happen and he ends up in a girls school for learning to become ‘drag-rides’ (mecha). [Me:Why is this a girls school?] {Also me:I don’t know!}. Other men are seen flying these mechas all over the place, but dammit this is a girls school and they are going to make Lux go there, so every girl there can fall all over him. Yes, the rating on this one is going down as I type this out and remember it. Basically ecchi/harem in spades try not to think about it.  Action sequences ticked this one up a notch to ‘average’.

Dislikes:
Been done before, will be done again. Count on it. Story idea isn’t bad but the writing and plot is. Why is this an all girls school again?

Like:
The action sequences are actually pretty good. The girls are cute.

Recommendation:
Skip. Unless you just want some more harem in your life, skip.

Extras:
I put the genre in order of importance to the show.

Quick Anime Reviews: Konosuba Season 2

Title:
Konosuba Season 2

Rating: 8/10

Episodes: 10

Genre:
Adventure, Comedy, Magic, Fantasy, Another World

Available On:
CrunchyRoll

Description:
Season two finds our misfits falling back into misfortune as Kazuma is declared a terrorist in league with the demon lord and no one will stand up for him. Well, no one competent at least. If you’ve seen the first season you know what to expect, if you haven’t, GO WATCH THE FIRST SEASON!!

Dislikes:
At one point I DID think I was going to burst something from laughing so hard. The last ‘arc’ was a bit weak compared to the earlier bits.

Likes:
If the first season’s humor works for you, this one has it in spades. They REALLY let you get some fun out of Darkness this season too! That girl ain’t right! I’ll laugh my guts out if it turns out that ‘cool guy’ that the parents were trying to hook up with Lalatina ends up being the demon lord or something like that!

Recommendation:
Watch. If you liked the first season watch this SOOO HARD. If you didn’t like the first season skip this as it’s more of the same (also what is WRONG with you!?? :p )

Extras:
I’ve not heard anything about ANOTHER season but I really hope it happens.

Quick Anime Reviews: Dragonar Academy

Title:
Dragonar Academy

Rating: 4/10

Episodes: 12

Genre:
Comedy, Ecchi, Fantasy, Battle School

Available On:
CrunchyRoll

Description:
Fantasy world where ‘Dragonars’ form bonds with various types of dragons and defend the kingdom from all threats. Our main character, Ash Blake, has three things that mark him as different from the other riders. One, he has the dragon’s mark, and in fact his is HUGE compared to everyone else’s, but no dragon has come forward for him. Second, he can mysteriously ride ANY dragon, even though dragons don’t let ANYONE but there bonded human touch them. And thirdly, when he DOES get his dragon parter it’s in the form of a young human girl instead of an actual dragon. This show ends up with a romantic triangle between Ash, his dragon, and a princess.

Dislikes:
Typical ecchi/shonen type show. Nothing to make it stand out. I’m forgetting it even as I type this review.

Likes:
Probably a fun light novel, but this one is just to ‘typical’ of the fantasy/ecchi/shonen type ‘battle school’ format to keep my interest.

Recommendation:
Skip. Just…skip.

Extra:
It’s REALLY close to a harem show, with the student body president just a half step away from trying to get in on the action. Since she didn’t, I’ll leave it as ‘Romance’ instead of ‘Harem’….barely.

Quick Anime Reviews: Mayo Chiki!

Mayo Chiki!

Rating: 5/10

Episodes: 13

Genre:
Harem, Comedy, School

Description:
Kinjirou Sakamachi has gynophobia due to his mother and sister constantly using him as a punching bag. His mother is a ‘super strong professional wrestler’ and his sister wants to follow in her footsteps. Because of his fear of women Kinjirou is considered a very odd duck at school, and the other odd ducks at his school are Kanade Suzutsuki, the headmaster’s daughter, and her ‘goes to school with her, “butler”‘ Subaru Konoe. Kinjirou is doing his best to just get through his school life while avoiding all contract with the girls around him. But, as these shows always do, he’s not going to get a quite life. Turns out one day when his stomach is really bothering him, he walks into Subaru using the stall and it turns out Subaru has a REALLY big secret. “He’s” actually a cross-dressing girl. “Hilarity ensues” when Subaru and Kanade decide to cure Kinjirou of his condition in payment for his silence on the matter. Expect all the typical harem hi-jinx to commence…because they do.

Dislikes:
Story is about as contrived as you’d imagine. Subaru is cute but it never goes into WHY she insists on being a ‘butler’. I mean, I get that her family has been in such positions for a long time, but a woman can be fill that role right? Just call it something other than ‘butler’?

Likes:
Subaru is cute, and I’d bet the light novel or manga this show is based on has some fun parts later in the story but you aren’t going to see it here folks. Why is Kanade starting to fall for Kinjirou too? I’d almost like to see the story focus on THAT pairing instead of Subaru but that’s not the OTP(On True Pairing) the story hints at.

Recommendation:
Skip unless you want a harem time waster.

Extras:
Do the girls in these types of show even KNOW any other males besides the lead? I mean, why would EVERY SINGLE GIRL want to get closer to this guy that refuses to even TOUCH them?

Quick Anime Reviews: Unlimited Fafnir

Title:
Unlimited Fafnir

Rating: 5/10

Episodes: 12

Genre:
Harem, Fantasy, Magic, Battle School

Available On:
CrunchyRoll

Description:
Around half a dozen ‘Dragons’ have invaded the earth with unimaginable magical powers and are destroying whatever they come across. Why are they here? What do they want?
Apparently they are just wanting sexytime with some teenage human girls. Not kidding, that’s the setup. These special girls (called “D’s) inherited some of the dragons powers and use them to fight them off or destroy them, but when the ‘color’ of the dragon matches the symbol on the girl’s body, she can get transformed into a similar dragon and that’s when the sexytime can get started. Enter Yuu Mononobe, the only male with the dragon symbol. He transfer’s to the all girls school to help the elite of the school fight off the rampaging dragons.

Dislikes:
VERY mediocre. Very tropey. If you’ve seen this type show before, you’ll not find anything new here. The characters look their actual age for the most part in this show, but that just makes the ‘reality’ of it worse. The story was left ‘open’ for a second season, but I don’t think it’s deserving of one. Maybe the manga the show is based off of is better?

Likes:
Yuu must trade his memories for power to get stronger, and he’s already forgotten some of his very youngest years with his sister. This leads him to have a very REAL sense of loss to protect others. That’s about it.

Recommendation:
Skip. If you are in the mood for a typical harem/shonen show this can fill that hole but there are probably better shows to watch.
