Quick Anime Reviews: “World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman”

World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman

Rating: 5/10

Episodes 12

Genre:
Action, Fantasy, Harem, Romance, School, Supernatural, BattleSchool, Shonen

Available On:
CrunchyRoll

Description:
In a world where magic exists but only for people who can remember their past lives the guy that can remember TWO past lives is king. The story starts with Moroha Haimura falling flat asleep during the opening ceremony to the Akane Private Academy where the mages of Japan are trained. Tests have revealed that Moroha has the ability to use magic and see his past life that can teach him to use the magic but he can’t remember his past lives yet. He gets a rude awakening by Satsuki Ranjou but it turns into a blessing as her appearance makes him start to remember…This one is actually a pretty good action show and may deserve a higher score, but I’m taking a point off for a weak, obvious ending. It ends, which is better than a lot of other shows I’ve seen but they leave a lot on the table, so a second season is possible eventually.

Dislikes:
Overpowered Main Character, no real sense of consequence, and a weak obvious ending hurt this one overall.

Likes:
Moroha isn’t a wimp. He’s also active, and even though this show has a harem feel going on, I think that he’s already decided on which girl is ‘the one’. Once that becomes known I think all hell is going to break out among the women and THAT would make for an interesting half dozen episodes.

Recommendation:
Watch. If you are in the mood for something rather light and shallow this one can entertain you for a few hours.

Rating: 6/10

Episodes 12, Season 1 (of 2)

Genre:
Slice of Life, Comedy, Shounen, (Candy??)

Available On:
Other? No longer on CrunchyRoll. Maybe you can find it on YouTube or Amazon?

Description:
Kokonotsu (Coconuts) Shikada is heir to a small candy shop in a small out of the way town, but he wants to be a manga artist when he grows up. It’s a point of contention between him and his Dad, ‘You’. One day a strange, VERY CUTE, girl named Hotaru Shindare shows up to recruit ‘You’ to work for her father’s very large candy distribution company. However “You”, won’t leave until his son agrees to take over the shop. Hotaru starts trying to convince Coconuts to do just that immediately. Hilarity ensues. Hotaru is a candy otaku, and lives and breath the stuff, but doesn’t seem to know much else. Kokonotsu’s childhood friends Saya and Tou get caught up in the fun too. Both Tou and Saya find they like the strange Hotaru. Tou because she’s fine and he’s a teenaged boy, and Saya because if Hotaru is successful, Kokonotsu will stay in town. Saya’s got it bad for coconuts and everyone knows it, except Kokonotsu, of course. Saya may regret letting Kokonotsu spend so much time with Hotaru though, after all she IS very cute. Yeah there’s a love triangle in the air. But mostly it’s about the candy!

Dislikes:
Not many from me honestly. It’s a bit obvious at times, but so is almost everything I watch. I do wish the main characters in a lot of these shows weren’t so dense that they cannot for the life of them, tell a girl (or boy) might, just MIGHT, actually already like them?….Oh, and why does everyone seem to be cross-eyed all the time?

Likes:
Love that this is basically an ode to candy. Hotaru and Kokonotsu know about everything there is to know about the many and sundry candies of Japan and they go to great lengths to out ‘knowledge’ the other about the subject. Kokonotsu is caught up in this knowledge fest despite the fact that he doesn’t want to take over his dad’s shop, mostly because he gets to spend time with Hotaru. I mentioned she’s cute, and he’s not blind, right? Yeah, I get the feeling that the ‘love triangle’ is going to end with the childhood friend out. Does the childhood friend EVER get her man? Like, EVER? Saya better hope that Hotaru is more interested in candy than she is in Hotaru. Still, it’s a cute, fun show and you’ll know a lot more about candy when you are done!

Recommendation:
Watch 2 episodes. If you like it, you’ll enjoy the rest. If you don’t; it doesn’t get any better go ahead and skip.

Extra:
Season two is showing now and I’m enjoying it on CrunchyRoll.  Season one, the one being reviewed here, is not on CrunchyRoll. You’ll have to find it elsewhere.
Seriously, this is mostly a show made to talk about candy. You gotta love that, right?

Quick Anime Review: Kaze No Stigma, Asobi ni Ikuyo:Bombshells from the Sky

Kaze No Stigma

5/10 (EP: 24)

  • Gary Stu Main Character? Check!
  • Forced Team up with MFC? Check.
  • Opponents with no logical reason for doing what they are doing? Check!
  • Main couple don’t understand their own feelings for each other? CHECK!

I could go on. This is about as “FIVE out of TEN” as you can get with regards to a ‘magical humans’ world anime. After watching the whole thing I STILL can’t tell you WTF is wrong with the main character’s Dad. Their relationship makes ZERO sense. Recommendation: Easy pass.

Asobi ni Ikuyo:Bombshells from the Sky

4/10 (EP: 12)

Very dumb.

Very silly.

Very good palate cleanser. Just turn your brain off and enjoy the silly…and fan-service, of course. I mean you knew that from the cover image and the title, right?

Inu X Boku Secret Service

6/10 (EP: 12)

It feels a bit odd giving this one a 6. I’m not sure it deserves this high of a ranking, but even though not much happens, I somehow enjoyed the show anyway. Social misfits find out they can make friends, and some of those friends can be as strange as you are. I’d say watch the first two episodes and if you aren’t impressed just pass. Don’t expect too much ‘story’ but enjoy the character’s growth and interaction. Also WTH is up with the ‘fiancee’?

5/10 (EP:12)

“Shonen magical fighting school” show (You know what I’m talking about!) where the girls do most of the fighting and the boys are there for support. The main character, as you’d expect, ends up the guy in the middle of several ‘alpha’ girls. This one didn’t make a lot of sense when you think about it (like AT ALL), but it has a lot of animated tits, so I guess they thought that was enough? If you want something forgettable as a time waster try the first couple of episodes and you’ll know what to expect. My advice, just try not to think about it.

Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon

5/10 (EP:12)

Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon

Sooo close to being a 6, but I found the ending unsatisfying. There is a LOT more I need to know about this world and this story. The ‘heretic vs hunter’ dynamic in the show doesn’t make it obvious who the good guys actually are, as there seem to be bad guys working on BOTH sides. The main characters are obviously good guys but there are hints the upper echelon might not be, but we are never given a hint where this story is going in the anime. Maybe it’s in the source material. I would watch a second season if it’s offered though, and that would affect it’s score, most likely positively,

Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero

4/10 (EP:12)

Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero

If you’d asked me 5 months ago I’d have given this a 5, but I’ve seen too much of the same lately to give it that much. Badass hero is badass (also a bit perverted). That is all. No surprises from this shonen.

Ladies Versus Butlers

4/10 (EP:12)

Ladies Versus Butlers

I can’t rank this show higher because I’ve basically already forgotten this one! Guy with scary face want’s to be a butler. Has hard time fitting in to a school for maids/butlers and the high class ladies they serve. I guess you’re supposed to stick around for the fanservice? The main character is so forgettable they forgot to even put him in the cover art!

As per always I’m trying not to spoil anything in the ‘review’ above, but I’ll gladly delve into them in the comments!

Quick Anime Reviews: Tsuredure Children, AHO-GIRL, My Hero Academia

Playing more WoW than watching Anime. Crunchyroll is happy with me I guess.

Tsuredure Children: 4/10 [EP:12]
Slice of life for a half dozen different ‘couples/pre couples’. Its cute and I actually suggest you watch it, but its just quick fun. Nothing lasting here. I’m sure most viewers will have at least one couple they can identify with.

AHO-GIRL: 3/10 [EP:12]
I’m not big of ‘girl hits boy’ comedy. I like ‘boy hits girl’ comedy even less. Still the female lead is REALLY dumb and annoying. Don’t recommend. Catchy Intro song though.

My Hero Academia: 6/10 [13/26 Season 1 Review]
I really liked it, even though it’s about as typical a shonen Hero Journey+High School show as you’ll find. This was one of the big hits when it came out, but I simply waited till I was in the mood for a shonen before getting around to it. The characters are interesting and I was surprised that they actually took their time telling the story.  Highly recommend this one, even if I don’t push it to a 7. I actually found myself actively wanting to binge this show and that’s unusual because lately I’ve gotten bored with series around the mid to last third and haven’t even finished them.

Currently on hold after about 5-8 shows: World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman, Twin Star Exorcists, Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon, The Asterisk War, Hundred, Beyond the Boundary, The Testament of Sister New Devil, Denpa Kyoushi, Dusk Maiden of Amnesia, plus a few more. As you can see, my interest wanes quickly these days.
