Love is Hard for Otaku

Title:
Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii (Love is Hard for Otaku)

Rating: 9/10

Episodes: 11

Genre:
Romance, Comedy

Available On:
OtakuStream

Description:
Otaku Office Romance. Doesn’t exactly excite does it? However, it’s a fun slice of life watching self admitted otaku interact and date while still maintaining a professional life (mostly).

Dislikes:
To damn short. I guess I’ll be falling in line and reading the manga. WANT MORE!

Likes:
The characters, the setting, the slow changes in relationships and just enjoyment in seeing characters I can relate to haveing a decent fun life. Did I mention I want more?

Recommendation:
If you consider yourself an anime fan, you’ll enjoy seeing a lot of yourself in these characters. You’ll find yourself rooting for them to do well and get closer to each other. Hell yes, I recommend this one.

Extras:
I REALLY hope this one gets a second season.

Description:
Shinichi Kanou is an otaku of all things animé, manga and video games; he’s also basically a hikikomori until he fills out an online test of his knowledge of said animé, manga and all things video games. The online test was to determine if the taker would be a good fit for a very special job, but the job had no definition. After passing the test and actually showing up for an interview, Shinichi’s world takes a turn for the weird. He finds he’s been recruited by the Japanese government to spread ‘otaku culture’ into a fantasy world and Shinichi couldn’t be happier! Said fantasy world has a direct two way magical portal to Japan, and the government wants to open another trading partner for all it’s cultural wares. Shinichi can’t wait to evangelise to all the humans, elves, and dwarves of this new world about his favourite things in the universe. His personal tastes and twisted perceptions are both a blessing and curse as he ends up the main ‘ambassador’ to the Eldant Empire. But is everything as it seems, or is there something underhanded going on?

Dislikes:
Shinichi just doesn’t seem to be the sort of person a harem would build on. I really don’t like worlds with slavery of any sort. Ending was a bit too neat and cliché for me.

Likes:
I LIKE that Shinichi doesn’t like slavery and class distinctions. He’s pretty much useless in a fight from start to finish, but he CAN think like the politician when he needs to. You might think that would be a complaint or dis-like, but a shut-in otaku SHOULDN’T be useful in a fight against trained military, fantasy OR modern defense forces.

Recommendation:
Watch two episodes if you are still interested continue, otherwise it doesn’t get better.

Extras/Spoilers:
Do not read if you do not want a mild spoiler.

You were warned.

I didn’t like the cold turn of the government in this one. It has a VERY “American” feel to it. Everything out of Hollywood is about ‘distrust of authority’ and this show has it as it’s endgame. Apparently the makers of this show don’t trust their own government to be a force for ‘good’ in the world, but just another selfish group of politicians out to grab as much power as they can. It’s not an optimistic outlook. While I can understand that point of view, and hell even have it myself most days, I did find it a bit disappointing.

I also found the situation of Shinichi disliking class distinctions, while simultaneously having a ‘maid’ that makes it very obvious she is ‘beneath’ him, and an Empress making it very obvious she is ‘above’ him, while BOTH obviously like him, an interesting topic this animé could have explored more.

Description:
It’s good to be on Kami’s (God’s) good side.
Just before the series starts, Touya Mochizuki is accidentally killed by Kami(again think ‘God’) and by way of apology Kami reincarnates him in a fantasy world with ‘all his stats maxed’. Hilarity ensues? Well a good bit yes. Touya is a bit too good of a guy for me, but the overall series goes for all the ‘tropes’ of this genre without fail and even makes fun of them AS they are doing it. (An example: It really did crack me up when the trope of ‘marry the princess’ comes up and Touya HIMSELF is saying “BUT YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ME!”) This is light-hearted bubblegum with surprisingly strong legs. I’d watch another season with no complaints.

Dislikes:
Main Character is TOO NICE, and if you aren’t in the mood for a harem complete with ALL the tropes just pass.

Likes:
The show makes fun of almost all the tropes it throws as you AS it throws them at you. Its light-hearted fun time waster/palate cleanser.

Recommendation:
Watch 1 episode. You’ll know if you should continue. If you are in the mood for something light, generic, a funny but not overbearingly so, this is a good quick show.

Extras:
The bit with the slimes never gets old.
I’ll add that a LOT of viewers apparently HATE this show for it’s ‘genericness’ and ‘a total konosuba ripoff’.  They aren’t wrong, but if you are in the right mood this one is still fun. At least it was for me when I watched it.

Quick Anime Reviews: Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon; Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero; Ladies Versus Butlers

Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon

5/10 (EP:12)

Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon

Sooo close to being a 6, but I found the ending unsatisfying. There is a LOT more I need to know about this world and this story. The ‘heretic vs hunter’ dynamic in the show doesn’t make it obvious who the good guys actually are, as there seem to be bad guys working on BOTH sides. The main characters are obviously good guys but there are hints the upper echelon might not be, but we are never given a hint where this story is going in the anime. Maybe it’s in the source material. I would watch a second season if it’s offered though, and that would affect it’s score, most likely positively,

Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero

4/10 (EP:12)

Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero

If you’d asked me 5 months ago I’d have given this a 5, but I’ve seen too much of the same lately to give it that much. Badass hero is badass (also a bit perverted). That is all. No surprises from this shonen.

Ladies Versus Butlers

4/10 (EP:12)

Ladies Versus Butlers

I can’t rank this show higher because I’ve basically already forgotten this one! Guy with scary face want’s to be a butler. Has hard time fitting in to a school for maids/butlers and the high class ladies they serve. I guess you’re supposed to stick around for the fanservice? The main character is so forgettable they forgot to even put him in the cover art!

As per always I’m trying not to spoil anything in the ‘review’ above, but I’ll gladly delve into them in the comments!

Quick Anime Reviews: Tsuredure Children, AHO-GIRL, My Hero Academia

Playing more WoW than watching Anime. Crunchyroll is happy with me I guess.

Tsuredure Children: 4/10 [EP:12]
Slice of life for a half dozen different ‘couples/pre couples’. Its cute and I actually suggest you watch it, but its just quick fun. Nothing lasting here. I’m sure most viewers will have at least one couple they can identify with.

AHO-GIRL: 3/10 [EP:12]
I’m not big of ‘girl hits boy’ comedy. I like ‘boy hits girl’ comedy even less. Still the female lead is REALLY dumb and annoying. Don’t recommend. Catchy Intro song though.

My Hero Academia: 6/10 [13/26 Season 1 Review]
I really liked it, even though it’s about as typical a shonen Hero Journey+High School show as you’ll find. This was one of the big hits when it came out, but I simply waited till I was in the mood for a shonen before getting around to it. The characters are interesting and I was surprised that they actually took their time telling the story.  Highly recommend this one, even if I don’t push it to a 7. I actually found myself actively wanting to binge this show and that’s unusual because lately I’ve gotten bored with series around the mid to last third and haven’t even finished them.

Currently on hold after about 5-8 shows: World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman, Twin Star Exorcists, Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon, The Asterisk War, Hundred, Beyond the Boundary, The Testament of Sister New Devil, Denpa Kyoushi, Dusk Maiden of Amnesia, plus a few more. As you can see, my interest wanes quickly these days.
